Durante una lezione di filosofia, il professore ci chiese come fosse entrato il Male nella Storia. Detto in altri termini, quale è stato il primo gesto malvagio compiuto dall’uomo? Un mio compagno di corso rispose senza esitazione: quello di Adamo. Sì, Adamo ed Eva hanno peccato, disubbidendo a Dio. Hanno assaggiato il frutto dell’albero della conoscenza. Ma solo mangiando quel frutto diventava possibile distinguere il Bene dal Male. Come si può dunque imputare ai nostri progenitori un peccato che non potevano riconoscere come tale?
Lasciato l’interrogativo aperto, ci domandammo quale fosse il secondo atto malvagio riconducibile, senza alcun dubbio, all’agire umano. In questo caso non ci furono esitazioni. Un unico nome affiorò sulle labbra di tutti: Caino. A differenza dei genitori, lui è consapevole della peccaminosità del suo gesto. Non ci sono scusanti. Si è macchiato di un delitto atroce: ha ucciso Abele, suo fratello. Nessuna giustificazione. Ma perché l’ha fatto? La Bibbia racconta che davanti ai doni presentati dai due fratelli, Dio lodò solo quelli di Abele. Dunque, il gesto di Caino fu generato dall’invidia? L’invidia per quel fratello migliore, quel fratello cui erano spettati riconoscimenti che a lui erano invece stati negati? Sicuramente questo fu uno dei motivi ma scavando in profondità è possibile trovare altre ragioni.
Nel gesto di Caino possiamo infatti scorgere anche la volontà di distruggere l’alterità. Caino vede in Abele l’Altro. E l’Altro è un ostacolo, un limite che deve essere eliminato. “Uccidere significa infatti sopprimere l’alterità dell’Altro vissuta come limitazione insopportabile della nostra libertà”. Una volta entrati in questa spirale, diventa impossibile vedere in chi ci sta davanti un compagno di viaggio, un altro uomo che, come noi, sta affrontando il cammino della vita. L’Altro appare semplicemente inutile, un ingombro di cui doversi sbarazzare. Agli occhi di Caino, Abele è l’intruso, il fratello che gli ha portato via il suo ruolo di figlio unico. Il fratello che gli ha rubato prima l’amore di Eva e poi quello di Dio. Ed ecco che torna ad affacciarsi un sentimento di cui abbiamo già parlato: l’invidia. Un’invidia prepotente, capace di accecare. Caino non sopporta di non essere più l’unico: unico figlio per i suoi genitori e primo e unico figlio dell’umanità intera. Abele con la sua nascita l’ha privato di tutto questo. E Caino, così come Narciso, non è in grado di sopportare “il reale del Due, il reale spigoloso del rapporto”. Per questo uccide. Per negare l’alterità. Per tornare ad essere l’unico.
Quanto di quel gesto si conserva nel nostro inconscio? Quante volte anche in noi sorge il desiderio di annullare l’alterità, di cancellarla, come se non fosse mai esistita? Sono queste le domande, lasciate aperte dal gesto di Caino, su cui siamo chiamati ad interrogarci.

La vicenda di Caino e Abele ci ricorda che, ancor prima dell’amore per il prossimo, a farsi strada nel mondo è stato l’odio. L’odio fratricida di Caino. E in quel gesto, in quel bisogno di proclamare la propria unicità, vediamo affiorare molte delle nostre debolezze.
Ci commuove vedere Caino offrire i suoi doni a Dio in un’implicita richiesta di riconoscimento e amore. Ma Caino, che avrebbe in quel momento un estremo bisogno di vedere riaffermato il suo ruolo, riceve invece l’umiliazione del rifiuto. Un rifiuto che non fa che riaccendere il suo odio nei confronti di quel fratello che gli ha portato via tutto. Quel fratello che ora anche Dio sembra preferire. Ma Dio lo sta solo costringendo a riconoscere di non essere solo, di non essere unico.
Anche noi non siamo soli. Anche noi siamo costantemente chiamati al confronto e al dialogo con gli altri, unico antidoto contro la violenza. La storia dei due fratelli ci ricorda che non è possibile pensare di annullare l’alterità, estirpandola dal mondo. L’alterità esiste, non come ostacolo, ma come occasione di crescita e confronto. L’Altro è qui per ridimensionare la nostra tendenza a rintanarci nel più assoluto solipsismo. L’Altro è qui per ricordarci che nessuno di noi è mai davvero figlio unico.
